Um setrið Rannsóknasetur Háskóla Íslands á Húsavík var stofnað haustið 2007 og hófst þá rannsóknastarfsemi þess. Setrið var formlega opnað 4. desember 2008. Á vegum Rannsóknaseturins er mikil samvinna við háskóla og stofnanir hérlendis og erlendis, bæði um rannsóknir og kennslu. Mörg verkefnanna beinast að hvölum, en einnig svifi, sjófuglum og loftslagsrannsóknum og öðru sem tengist rannsóknum á hafinu og lífríki þess. Rannsóknasetrinu er stýrt af Dr. Marianne Helene Rasmussen, sérfræðingi í rannsóknum á sjávarspendýrum. Marianne er með doktorsgráðu frá Háskólanum í Suður-Danmörku, Óðinsvéum, og bar doktorsritgerð hennar titilinn "A study of communication and echolocation sounds recorded from free-ranging white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) in Icelandic waters”. Sumarnámskeið Sumarnámskeið 2025 verða haldin 28. maí til 6. júní. Skjálfandaflói er einn besti staðurinn á Íslandi til að fylgjast með hvölum og stunda rannsóknir á þeim. Námskeiðið Aðferðir við rannsóknir á sjávarspendýrum er haldið á sumrin í samstarfi við Líf- og umhverfisvísindadeild. Þar eru kynntar margar þær aðferðir sem notaðar eru við rannsóknir á villtum hvölum. Í samstarfi við hvalaskoðunarfyrirtæki fá þátttakendur tækifæri til að kynnast og taka á virkan þátt í rannsóknum, auk þess sem þeir framkvæma eigið rannsóknarverkefni. Þátttakendur greiða sjálfir gistingu, uppihald og annan kostnað og bera ábyrgð á að koma sér á staðinn. Rannsóknasetrið tekur frá gistingu á Húsavík Hostel fyrir þá sem það kjósa. Umsóknarfrestur er til 15. mars og er hægt að sækja um og fá frekari upplýsingar hér.
